Choose between Hario V60 01 and 02 paper filters based on your dripper size and brew volume. This guide explains the differences and helps you pick the right one.
Quick answer
The V60 01 filter fits the 01 dripper and brews 1-2 cups, while the 02 filter fits the 02 dripper and brews 1-4 cups. Choose the filter that matches your dripper size and desired batch volume.
Why filter size matters
Using the wrong filter size can affect water flow and extraction. A filter that is too small may collapse under the coffee bed, while one that is too large can fold unevenly and block the spiral ridges of your V60 dripper. Both scenarios lead to inconsistent brew times and muddy flavors.
Hario designs each filter to match the exact dimensions of its corresponding dripper. The 01 and 02 filters are not interchangeable between dripper sizes, even though they share the same cone angle.
Capacity and brew volume differences
The 01 filter holds up to 2 cups (about 300 ml of brewed coffee), making it ideal for a single morning serving or a small shared cup. The 02 filter holds up to 4 cups (about 600 ml), giving you room for a larger batch or a second round without brewing again.
If you regularly brew for two or more people, the 02 filter saves time. For solo drinkers who prefer a single mug, the 01 filter keeps your brew compact and efficient.
How to choose the right V60 filter
- Match your dripper size: Use the 01 filter only with the 01 dripper, and the 02 filter only with the 02 dripper. Never mix sizes — the filter will not seal properly and will affect extraction.
- Consider your brew volume: If you typically brew 1-2 cups (up to 300 ml), choose the 01 filter. For 2-4 cups (up to 600 ml), choose the 02 filter. The 02 filter can also brew smaller amounts, but the 01 is more economical for single servings.
- Check your dripper model: Both 01 and 02 filters are available for the standard V60 dripper (plastic, ceramic, glass, or metal). If you own a V60 Switch or other specialty dripper, verify compatibility — some models only accept one size. Confirm your dripper model before purchasing filters.
